The following are the steps on how to install trims above the kitchen cabinet:

  • Step 1

First thing is we should measure the top of the cabinet. To do this, we need a measuring tape. We also need to measure the front and the two sides of the top cabinet. We need to be very careful in measuring. An accurate measurement is needed. Measuring is the most important thing because if we don 19t get it right, we will have to do the project all over again.

  • Step 2

The next step is to transfer the measurements from the cabinet to the 1x2 board by using a pencil. We will need to create a small frame for the crown molding which it is going to be nailed to.

  • Step 3

Third step is the cutting of the 1x2 board according to our measurements. For this, we should have three pieces, one for each of the cabinet sides and another one for the front.

  • Step 4

After the cutting of the board, we now go to the nailing of the 1x2 board together using a pneumatic nail gun. After that, we nail the framing onto the top of the cabinet frame. This will give our crown molding to have a sturdy place.

  • Step 5

Before finally placing the crown moldings, we have to measure it again to make sure that it will fit right into place.

  • Step 6

Our next step would be the setting of the miter saw at a 45-degree angle. An accurate 45-degree angle cut will allow us to make a perfect corner with the crown molding. After that, we cut the pieces while keeping in mind the different angles each molding has. Then we have to make a 90-degree angle miter cut again where the crown moldings touch the wall.

  • Step 7

For this step, we will apply a small amount of wood glue to the crown moldings where it connects with the 1x2 frame on the top of the cabinet. When we apply wood glue on the molding corners, there is no need to nail the pieces of the molding together. Hey will all be attached with the wood glue. Anyway, it will be strong enough for the glue to hold the pieces together.

  • Step 8

The final step would be filling the nail holes. For this, we use wood putty to cover up the holes. We then finish the cabinet with any desired wood paint or stain.

We can now enjoy the new look of our kitchen cabinets with a trim.
