Remodeling The Attic
Everyone loves to add more space to their homes. One great way to do that is by remodeling the attic. By creating a room or two on the attic area, we can add more space and give our homes a new attractive look.
If we have a big attic, we can create even two rooms with it. These two rooms will add more space for our homes. Attics will now not just a place to place our stored items to, but also accommodate rooms.
For us who wants to create a room out of our attics, here are the steps that we need to follow:
- Step 1
First thing is to run wires and install outlets for the lights and switches. This is done while the attic walls are still open. We can hire an electrical contractor for this step if we are not that familiar with electrical matters. This is important so that we will have a good lightning for our attic rooms.
- Step 2
Second thing we need to do is lay down a plywood subfloor over the floor joists. This is done if the floor does not exist yet. The joists may need some strengthening to it for it to support the adjacent living space.
- Step 3
For this step, what we need to do is install knee walls and frame rooms. We have to insulate between the studs of the knee wall and also the roof rafters. If needed, we may want to raise the collar ties to increase the height of the ceiling.
- Step 4
Fourth step would be the adding of heating system. This depends on what we like our heating system to be. It 19s our choice. If we are using hot air or centralized air conditioning, we have to install duct work on the attic while the walls are still open.
- Step 5
Next step is to finish the room with a wallboard on the walls and on the ceilings. We will then lay the flooring of our choice. After that, we make final electrical connections. The most important thing for the electrical connections on the attic is the lightning. There should be enough lightning above the attic, so that the room will be bright. This way, it would have a different atmosphere, and it wouldn 19t feel like the old attic we had that is really dark and spooky.
- Step 6
After the final installation of the electrical, we then have to spackle and paint the walls. We hang the doors and install door and window trims.
That is how we create rooms out of the attic. Most of the kids will love to stay here and make it their bedrooms. If there is more space, it could even be a good play room for children. Other people create the attic into a guest room. This is good for homes that only has enough rooms for the family and nothing for the visitors.
