We all know that computers are made up of machines and peripherals. But would you believe that the earliest computers are none other than humans? Yes, indeed that is true. The early people use their own minds in doing and creating things. The term itself “computer” was the ancient name given for women who does repetitive calculations for tide charts, navigational tables, astronomical records and so forth. What they did was to calculate all throughout the day. They did it by themselves without the use of calculators and any digital device like what we are using these days. Just imagine how much time it will take them just to do a simple calculation. Now, it will only take us within seconds to get answers for a very complicated equation. That is why ancient people work all day with their computing jobs.
After that, a mechanical device called the abacus came into existence. This is a calculating device that is invented by the Chinese. The abacus is actually the first ever computing device ever invented. It is made up of a framed box with pebbles. There are still abacus being used today, which can perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There are now a lot of modern designs of abacus and performs faster calculations.
From the dawn of the abacus, there came a lot of calculating devices that were invented. All offers a faster calculating device from the other. Inventors like Blaise Pascal created the Pascaline, which is a device used by tax collectors. It is the father of all tax collecting devices. After that came the invention of German Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz which is the “stepped reckoner”. It is another device that is used for performing basic calculations.
There are so many inventors after them that have created the faster and more accurate calculations. Then come to the birth of modern computers in the mid 1940’s. These are like the computers we are using today, only, they are far larger. The CPU or the processor of today that we are using can be the size of an entire building. Along the years, these machines have been reduced into smaller pieces but with larger amount of data being stored.
We can now have computers at home without having a whole other house as a processor. We can even use laptops which has a very small processor. How about mobile phones? They are just tiny devices compared to the early ones but we can now store data on them, and can even access to the internet. There are so many advancements of technology and computers are one of the best breakthroughs.
